3 Reasons You Should Consider Using a Rug on Carpet

IMPORTANT NOTIFICATION: you can, in fact, put a rug on carpet.

Listen, we know that various self-proclaimed interior design gurus have hammered into our collective mind that you should, under no circumstances, place a *rug* on a *carpeted floor* but these are the same people who say things like "it's totally okay to remove the fringe from your hand-woven rug." (it’s, uh, it’s not. Get too hasty with fringe-trimming and you run the risk of your rug unraveling.)

So now that we've dismantled the credibility of these so-called experts, let's talk about why you might want to put a rug on top of carpet:

1. Most wall-to-wall carpet comes in a neutral hue that works well with Turkish rugs.
Persian and Turkish rugs look best against a neutral background. In terms of hue, the deep browns of most hardwood floors belong to the same family as the beiges of many wall-to-wall carpets.

2. You would like to create discrete places within the space of your room.
If you’re working with a room that has multiple different uses, a rug can help demarcate different spaces within that room: a rug between couches sets that space aside as the “living room,” while another situated under a dining table or, in a studio apartment, under/near a bed helps make clear that that is the “bed room.”

3. Comfort is king.
What is more comfortable than one rug? Two rugs. Winter is on its way, and layering a Turkish rug on your existing carpet will keep your feet warm and happy even when the temperatures drop.
