The rugmaker wove four scorpions into the central medallion as a way of protecting its eventual owner from their harm; in the two large diamonds, the rugmaker wove one of the most popular kilim motifs: a joined “hands on hips” and “rams horn” motif, meant to represent (and therefore create!) a happy home. The design of the scattered bird and flowers throughout the rest of the rug are evidence of the rug’s nomadic origin.
